What Is the Boiler Upgrade Scheme?
The Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS) is a UK government grant programme that helps homeowners in England and Wales replace fossil fuel heating systems with low-carbon alternatives. For 2025, the grant amount is £7,500 for air source heat pumps (ASHPs) and ground source heat pumps (GSHPs).

Who Is Eligible?
To qualify for the BUS grant:
- Your property must be in England or Wales
- You must be replacing an existing fossil fuel heating system (gas, oil, or LPG)
- Your property must have a valid EPC with no outstanding recommendations for loft or cavity wall insulation (or evidence these have been addressed)
- The installation must be carried out by an MCS-certified installer
- The heat pump must be MCS-certified
How the Grant Works
The BUS grant is applied directly by your MCS-accredited installer — you don’t claim it yourself. The installer applies to Ofgem on your behalf, deducting the grant from your quoted price upfront. You only pay the remaining amount after the grant.

- Get quotes from MCS-accredited installers (find them at mcsregistered.com)
- The installer checks your eligibility
- Installation takes place
- Installer claims the grant from Ofgem
- You pay the net cost minus the £7,500
Is the Scheme Running Out?
The BUS is currently funded through to 2028 as part of the government’s heat pump ambitions. However, it is worth applying sooner rather than later, as policy changes could affect future availability.
