Heat Pump Insurance: What’s Covered & What You Need

Standard home insurance rarely covers heat pump breakdowns. Here's what you need to protect your investment.

Myles Robinson founded UK Heat Pump Servicing, the trading name of Home By Eight Ltd, to give heat pump owners across the UK a single nationwide point of contact for annual servicing, fault diagnosis and repair, cover plans and new installations. The guides published here are written and maintained by Myles with input from the company's MCS-accredited engineering team, and are reviewed whenever grant schemes, prices or manufacturer advice change.

Standard Home Insurance

Standard building and contents insurance policies typically do not cover the cost of repairing or replacing a heat pump that breaks down through mechanical or electrical failure. They may cover accidental damage, vandalism, or loss — but not standard breakdown.

What Heat Pump Cover Plans Provide

A dedicated heat pump cover plan (£15–£30/month) typically covers:

  • Annual service visit
  • Callout fees
  • Labour for covered repairs
  • Parts up to a specified limit

This is the appropriate protection for heat pump breakdown.

Manufacturer Warranty

New heat pump installations come with a manufacturer warranty, typically 2–5 years standard. Many brands offer extended warranties (up to 7–10 years) if registered within 30 days of installation. The warranty covers manufacturing defects but not wear-and-tear failures after the warranty period.

Our Recommendation

Keep your manufacturer warranty active by ensuring annual servicing by a qualified engineer. Once out of warranty, consider a comprehensive cover plan. UK Heat Pump Servicing offers plans from £19/month including annual service and breakdown cover.
