Heat Pump Electrical Requirements: What You Need to Know

Heat pump installation has specific electrical requirements. Here's what your home needs before installation.

Consumer Unit Capacity

Most ASHPs require a dedicated 32A circuit. Check your consumer unit has space for an additional MCB. If your current cutout fuse is only 60A, it may need upgrading to 80A or 100A to accommodate the heat pump alongside other electrical loads — cost £150–£300.

Dedicated Circuit

The heat pump outdoor unit requires a dedicated 230V single-phase circuit from the consumer unit. The hydrobox/indoor unit requires a separate control circuit. All electrical work should be carried out by a Part P registered electrician.

Smart Meters

Smart meters are compatible with all modern heat pumps and are recommended to track electricity consumption accurately. Time-of-use tariffs (beneficial for heat pump users) require a smart meter.

Three-Phase Power

Larger heat pumps (14 kW+) may require three-phase electricity supply, which is more common in rural areas. Three-phase connection costs £1,000–£3,000 if not already in place.
