What Is dB(A)?

dB(A) is the A-weighted decibel scale, calibrated to represent how the human ear perceives sound. It’s the standard measurement used for heat pump noise ratings.

Reference Points

  • 30 dB(A): Library interior
  • 40 dB(A): Quiet office, typical heat pump at 1m
  • 50 dB(A): Light rain, refrigerator
  • 60 dB(A): Conversation at 1m

Typical Heat Pump Noise Levels

  • Very quiet models (e.g., Samsung Mono HT Quiet): 40 dB(A) at 1m
  • Standard units: 44–48 dB(A) at 1m
  • Older units: 50–55 dB(A) at 1m

UK Planning Rule

Permitted development requires noise not to exceed 42 dB(A) at 1m from a neighbour’s window or door. Most modern units meet this at typical installation distances.
