Permitted Development (England)
ASHPs can usually be installed without planning permission under permitted development rights, provided:
- Only one per property
- Not on a wall facing a highway
- Noise below 42 dB(A) at neighbour’s window
- Not a listed building
Conservation Areas and AONBs
In conservation areas and Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty, restrictions are more severe. Wall-mounted units may require planning permission. Check with your local planning authority.
Listed Buildings
Listed Building Consent is required for any heat pump installation on a listed building.
Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland
Permitted development rules differ between UK nations. Always verify with your local authority if in doubt.
