Myles Robinson founded UK Heat Pump Servicing, the trading name of Home By Eight Ltd, to give heat pump owners across the UK a single nationwide point of contact for annual servicing, fault diagnosis and repair, cover plans and new installations. The guides published here are written and maintained by Myles with input from the company's MCS-accredited engineering team, and are reviewed whenever grant schemes, prices or manufacturer advice change.

Don’t Switch the Heat Pump Off Completely

Unlike a gas boiler, switching a heat pump off completely during winter risks frost damage to the property and makes the reheat inefficient. Use holiday/frost protection mode instead.

Holiday Mode Settings

  • Set the controller to holiday or away mode
  • Target temperature: 12–15°C (frost protection, not zero heating)
  • Hot water cylinder: reduce to minimum or switch to once-a-week legionella cycle only

Coming Home

Set the heat pump to resume normal operation a few hours before you return — heat pumps take longer than gas boilers to bring a cool house back to comfort temperature.
